BluePrint Mini-Grants

Greater Lafayette Coalition for Living Well After 50
A.H. Ismail Center for Health, Exercise and Nutrition
Purdue University

West Lafayette, IN

Project Title:   ACE initiative: Awareness, Communication & Education

Amount Funded:   $25,000

About the Organization/Coalition:
The Coalition consists of 25 community partners. The steering committee includes representation from the following partners: A.H. Ismail Center, Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Action Programs, Inc., Senior Center of Tippecanoe, Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department, the Indiana Governor's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports, and the Purdue University Health and Kinesiology Department and Gerontology Program. The Coalition has the potential to serve both the Greater Lafayette Community and the state by acting as a resource for other Indiana communities.

Project Objectives:

  1. To develop a marketing brochure for the Coalition to: a) increase awareness of its vision, mission and goals; b) solicit active participation by all of the key stakeholders in the community; and c) use as a first step in garnering financial and in-kind support to sustain the current and future initiatives of the Coalition.
  2. To develop a comprehensive resource book of physical activity opportunities in the Greater Lafayette Community. Information gathered will also be included on the Coalition web site. The first edition of the guide will be available free, and will be disseminated throughout the medical system, worksites, and via community groups, agencies, and organizations that come in contact with the target population.
  3. To create a Coalition web site to include the community guide, a quarterly newsletter, and an "ask the experts" feature.
  4. To create public service announcements and posters utilizing local role models and highlighting the existence of the Coalition and the services it provides. Posters will be displayed were adults over age 50 live, work, and worship. The local cable TV station also will produce at least one show dedicated to the Coalition.
  5. To offer community forums, presentations, and/or town hall meetings to educate the Greater Lafayette Community about the National Blueprint and the local Coalition's vision and mission, products, programs and services.

Progress Report:
The third Coalition for Living Well After 50 Leadership Summit was held June 10 at Westminster Village in West Lafayette, IN. Forty-nine people representing 40 unique community groups attended. The summit provided an opportunity for the steering committee to remind partners about the significance of the Coalition and to provide an overview of current activities. The coalition aims to systematically and comprehensively identify and address barriers to physical activity; reduce duplication of services; enhance the effectiveness of all programs; and leverage support from within the community. Activities that are underway include the following.

  • A telephone survey has been conducted to identify older adults' physical fitness needs with respect to increasing activity. Information obtained will allow the coalition to implement programs and secure future funding.
  • The ACE Initiative mini-grant has already supported the development of a logo. Marketing brochures, a web site, a community resource manual, public service announcements, and community forums to reach out to under-represented segments of the community are in development.
  • A conference will be held in Sept 2004 titled: An Integrated Community Approach to Encouraging Active Lifestyles.

Coalition partners now total 56 individuals representing 45 unique affiliations. The coalition also announced its aspiration to be a role model for other Indiana communities and to build long-term sustainability, increase committee involvement, and seek sources of local, state and foundation funding.
