About the Organization:
America Walks
is a non-profit national coalition of local advocacy groups dedicated to promoting
walkable communities. Our mission is to foster the development of community-based
pedestrian advocacy groups, to educate the public about the benefits of walking,
and, when appropriate, to act as the collective voice for walking advocates.
For decades, walking has
been the forgotten mode of transportation. Yet walking is a critical component
of our urban transportation system. One quarter of all trips in the United States
are less than one mile in length. The potential for increased walking is enormous.
America WALKs was founded
in 1996 on two principles: first, that walking is a practical transportation
choice with powerful benefits for both individuals and their communities, second,
that local grassroots advocacy is the most effective way to transform our country's
transportation system.
Today, America WALKs provides a support network for local pedestrian advocacy
groups. We offer advice about how to get started and how to be effective with
public officials and engineering and design professionals.
America WALKs and its member
organizations envision an America where every city street has sidewalks... where
drivers always respect pedestrians... where a ten-year-old can safely walk to
buy a loaf of bread. You can help realize this vision! Work with your neighbors
to reclaim your street and your community. Help to design the transportation
system of the future.
Above all, walk! Walk to
the store, walk to work, walk your children to school, walk to visit your friends.
Remember, you make a difference with every step you take.
